The definition of BT corn:
Bt-corn is a type of genetically modified organism, termed GMO. A GMO is a plant or animal that has been genetically modified through the addition of a small amount of genetic material from other organisms through molecular techniques. BT is essentialy a type of corn that has an insectiside already in the genetic makeup of the corn but does not harm humans. While the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) regulates genetically modified foods, it considers Bt-corn to be nutritionally equivalent to traditional corn. The Bt delta endotoxin was selected because it is highly effective at controlling Lepidoptera larvae, caterpillars. ). For this reason, GMOs that have the Bt gene are compatible with biological control programs because they harm insect predators and parasitoids much less than broad-spectrum insecticides. The Bt endotoxin is considered safe for humans, other mammals, fish, birds, and the environment because of its selectivity. Bt has been available as a commercial microbial insecticide since the 1960s and is sold under many trade names. These products have an excellent safety record and can be used on many crops until the day of harvest.

My pov:i believe that creating a BT corn is very practical because it harms less than a traditional pesticide and also does not harm humans because of its natural selectivity. By having pesticide in the genetic make up of the corn, cost Ir driven down because of the reduction of deystroyed crops, human sickness, and the cost of using dangerous chemicals. although there has not been any long term testing against using BT corn and that long term health affects has not been readily identified or documented i cant say that it is 100 percent safe. although I think that for immediate and temporary uses using Bt corn is absolutley fine Royal1688.

kareena: Explain and Explore All ethical implications of the production of the GMO:
  • An ethical implication associated with BT corn is that the product is still part of a new practice that hasn't been throughly processed yet so, one must be careful when developing new practices and, use of this corn.
  • Since BT corn is suppose to produce its own herbicides, yes, it is a plus for farmers to produce more crops however, the increase herbicide use would negitavely effect the enviorment. Also, plants ofen build up immunity to the persticieds overtime, deceasing the potential of BT corn.
  • Another ethical concern would be that, even though the pesticides produced for the plant are to ward off certain insects like caterpillars, other insects, like the monarch butterfly could unintentionally be harmed also. I believe that the monarch butterfly is said to be in extinction? If so, then BT corn is aiding in eliminating a species that is not attacking the plant.
  • Even though BT corn is claimed to have very little harmful effects on humans, some protiens that have been made for BT corn are being ingested by humans and, no one really knows the long term effects that could be associated with those protiens.

To further elaborate on the origins of BT corn, I will add that the donor organism is a naturally occuring soil bacterium called Bacillus thuringiensis. The gene that codes for Bt endotoxin from this bacterium causes intestinal rupture to the insects that consume it


I believe that the use of Bt endotoxins is something that should have been tested in more long term trials to determine its environmental impact and its suitability for human consumption. Also, the FDA does not require GMO foods to be labeled as such, consequently there is no way for anyone to know wether they are growing "natural" corn unless the company chooses to divulge that information. Studies cited by the Organic Consumers Association indicate that the production of GMO organisms create random genetic events that can't be controlled. They OCA also cites sources that claim that the viral promoter DNA contained in donor organisms can surpress or activate normal genes possessed in the recipient organism and change the nutrient structure of said organism. I realise the bias associated with this source, however if their evidence is valid then no GMO can truly be considered harmless.
